One of our most visited websites is a free directory submission site – EasySubmits.
We came up with an idea to create EasySubmits while submitting our own sites to the directories. It took forever to fill out the forms, especially find the right categories in the drop down boxes. This is when we decided to automate it. Even though there are other desktop applications, we thought that we could bring something new to the table. Something that with a better tracking and availability from anywhere as long as there is a browser and internet connection. We were not satisfied with the results after trying a few desktop applications since most of them are pretty complicated to figure out, don’t work or crash half the time.
At first we just put it out online. It was not available for public for a few months and we thought about starting a directory submission service. Since we do custom web projects and have a lot on the plate, we changed our mind about submission service and made it public. It took off almost instantly. In just a few weeks we had so much traffic that we had to dump a shared hosting and move to a dedicated one. Now some sql tables, such as tracking, have over 1,000,000 records. EasySubmits gets 200-500 new user registrations every day and around 10,000 daily page views.
There were a few problems on the way and some are still there. Directories tend to go up and down on a regular basis. With over 500 listings it is hard to keep up and assure quality of the list. Some directories become paid as they grow and attract more traffic, others get broken with the corrupted databases, smarty errors or just disappear and the rest keep on changing their captcha settings. It also happens that directories go down for a day or two while switching hosting or having problems with the server load. These are the main issues that we have to deal with.
Now I would like to go over directory submissions in general.
Many people tend to believe that directory submissions do not have any effect on SEO anymore. While it doesn’t make much sense to spend days and days to submit, we believe that it still has a certain effect. The main argument is that people don’t see much links listed in google from the directories by typing “link:url” and this is true. You will not see every single link, however, you should still see some. Besides, search engines do not show every link that they know about. Another factor is the amount of pages that the directories have. When you submit a link, it usually goes to the top of the list, and as more and more links get added, your listing gets pushed down to further pages. Yes, those pages are PR0 in most of the cases, but being around relevant content still passes some value.
Many people do the submissions wrong. They use the same anchor text or irrelevant anchor text. Do the keyword research, go towards the keywords for which you want to rank good and change the title (anchor text) every 50 submissions or so… This way you will get good ranking for the keywords and search engines will not think that you are trying to spam them with the same link titles. For instance, if you are trying to get higher on search engines for “florida realtor”, don’t use “florida realtor” all the time. Make a few variations like “realtor in florida”, “florida real estate”, “real estate services in florida”, etc.
Just to prove the point, we did an experiment once. We got a new site and submitted to all of the directories with a few relevant keywords. In a week we had no backlinks showing in google, however, we were already indexed. With some onsite optimization we were already on page 8. Two week later, some directories showed up and we had 2 backlinks, however, we were already on page 2. It is up to you, but we believe that directory submissions still have some effect, not as much as few years back , but it still helps.
Some people also say that it is bad to submit to over 10 directories a day. We don’t think it matters since the directories have different approval time. While some may list you the same day, others wouldn’t approve your site for months. That is besides the fact that the links will be picked up by search engines at different times as spiders don’t crawl the same page over and over every day. We just chose 100 since we get bored to submit all day and the number works for us. What’s more important is continuous link building.
Another point that you may find useful – do not use primary email address for directory submissions. Many directories do send spam! Register one that you will be using for submissions and commenting on the sites that send spam.
These are pretty much the points that we had to share with a few users who would email us and ask for some advice. We hope you can find this information useful.

* Update: we removed some sort fields since they were affecting page load speed and added “Requires Captcha” to the listings and sorting options.

Where can submit my golf related site, can’t found any category…..
We have “recreation” category there, however, please check each directory as some may have “sports” or even “golf” one. EasySubmits lists only has the most common categories of all the directories.

Sure, you can use a contact form on the site to suggest directories. We have over 1000 disabled directories as well. If you suggest a directory that has been disabled for not meeting the quality standard, we will not add it. Also, easysubmits doesnt work with all of the directories since we only have parsers for popular scripts that do not require logins or any kind of authentication. Directories also need to have a direct link to submit page.

It takes time to write the parser for each directory. We usually add 1 new directory every once in a while and add a ton of them all at once sometimes. We have over 200 new ones waiting to be added, just waiting for some things to close so we have more time to add them. We submitted non-english sites before and got quite a few approvals. It depends on the directory owners, but we used English title and description. As for EN Description, it should still help since you will still be getting a link. You may also try using FR title and EN description. It may lower the approval rate but it will benefit you more SEO-wise.

@e-webtemplates: good directory list, but doesn’t have the semi-automated submissions, takes way too much time. I still prefer http://www.addurl.nu for manual submissions as they have many directories and the list is a very high quality unlike directorycritic with a ton of dead links. As for social bookmarking, http://www.socialmarker.com is the one I prefer to use.
As far as I can see, isubmitlinks is not much different than any other directory list, just lets you know that you can use firefox addons to prefill the information, which still doesn’t do a decent job on category selection.

Do you guys only have Php Link Directory sites indexed? I notice that you must simply use method=post the form data to all the submit.php pages of the directories. Pretty wild technique.

We chose only free directories that do not require registration and have similar data structure. We just need to make sure that the directories do not require more fields that we get from the users, such as address, secondary category, etc… This is where php link directory is more common.
As for other scripts, which ones are you talking about? We support a few more, the issue is that most of the time they don’t have a submit page where we can take categories and just “post” the data.

@Ships Sorry to hear that you don’t like the service. It usually take about the same time to load easysubmit directory page as it takes to load submit page of the directory itself. Autosubmit is good, roboforms is good too, but does it select the right category for you and keep track of results? Anyway, thanks for the feedback. If anybody is experiencing slow load times, please let us know as it is not something that we worry about at this point and it seems to load fast for us.

I suggest to all users to submit to multiple directories at the same time by clicking ctrl + the directory link. It will bring up the directories in different tabs, making them all load at the same time.

@Shawn – there is a section in contact us area. We do not approve all of the directories, only the ones that work well with our parsers.

@Andy: It should mark the site as visited when you click on the directory link. As for approvals, you would need to click “check status” next to each directory to see if you have been approved. Just a note here, there is a lot of spam that directories get from blogspot.com domains and listing and approval rate for .blogspot.com should be lower than a regular domain.
Hi Rasim. I opened the excel file. It says 169 site visited. I pasted a few of these in to the EasySubmits find box to see which ones have been approved, and you are correct. None of them! Blogspot.com Mmmm

Hi I did submitted about 150 directories but some were rejected, but anyways it’s a good helping hand for us. My suggestion if you can put PR 7 to 9 so much better, and without catpcha which makes us more faster to submit sites.My 2 cents.

SE do care for directories and therefore their listings. But they have devalued a lot of directory PR’s in the past, I guess that led people to the conclusion, directory submissions were not SEO friendly any more.
But I do share your opinion on changing the title tags every once in a while…

It has been almost a year since I transferred over the site. As far as I can tell, they are allowing only a certain amount of free submissions now.
The site does require regular maintenance, updates and dedicated hosting. Since webmasters are ad blind, something had to be done sooner or later.
Hi: I paid the $4.99 subscription so I could submit to more the 4 sites and it is still telling me to Subscribe and WILL NOT LET ME SUBMIT!! I have sent an email to support – please RESPOND this is pretty frustrating

@Jennifer: We do not own the site anymore, please use the contact form on the site to contact them. Try sending another email. If I were you and wouldn’t hear a reply on the second email, I would get refund with paypal (if you paid with paypal). As far as I know, they just implemented the paid version not too long ago, may be it is still in the works.
@STF-U: It used to be a completely free service but looks like they started to limit the number of free submissions. Hopefully, it will give more interest to further develop the site and add quality new directory listings more frequently.
i dont know man. I am using this service to the sites of my client but i cant log in anymore because instead of the url of the sites to be used to log in, they changed it to email. And i cant access the email of my client and thus i cant use this service anymore.
@STF-U: Yeah, I just went over to easysubmits and was not able to login with the old account info as well. Looks like they are implementing some major changes.

Just submitted some sites made it real easy. Great site over all. I like it.
Just a thought… Maybe a search for the most relevant directories or seo specific directories would be cool. Submitting to 50 randoms fast is cool. But I would definitely pay money to submit to 50 directories with key word relevance to my site. Charge me 20 dollars and i can get it done if 15 minutes and i would be happier than a pig in shit.

I can understand the need to make it chargeable (after all, money needs to be generated or it would be difficult to maintain and develop), however I was wondering if you guys are planning on bringing out another completely free submission tool or if Easysubmits is still the one you recommend?

I don’t have any plans to develop new tools in this area in the near future as I switched the focus and working mostly on contract development work, have been pretty busy with it for the past 2 years. I have a project in development for custom cms for directories, but I had it for a while as well and not sure if I will ever finish it. As for submission tools, I haven’t been following the latest developments.
I used to use autofill firefox plugin before, but it didn’t select the categories.
